Surgery went very well
Josh did very well in surgery today. He is recovering at Walter Reed in Ward 57. He has an epidural for pain management and will be weaned off of that as he progresses. He is expecting some definite pain resulting from the surgery but is prepared for that and after released from the hospital will be able to start working out again. He won't be able to get back on his prosthetics for around 4 weeks, but after that, it will hurt much less when he has them on.
The reason for the surgery was excess bone growth on his femur. It's called Heterotopic Ossification (HO) and had caused some really painful sharp edges that grew from the end of his bone. Here is a picture of an actual model of his bone & the HO.
This is what they removed today to allow for a much more comfortable fit with his prosthetics. He will get additional radiation tomorrow to slow and hopefully stop the HO from coming back.We are very happy that things went well and Josh is feeling good. Thank you for the prayers and thoughts and continue to keep him in mind as he recovers.
